When we think about glamour, we often think about resplendent beauty, charm, and attraction. And these are all true! But we also need to think of it from a linguistic perspective. “Glamour” comes from the latin “grammatica,” from which we also get the English “grammar,” with “glamour” itself as an 18th century Scottish derivation meaning “enchantment, magic.” “Grammatica” means “scholarship and learning,” and in the Middle Ages, was also used to refer to arcane and occult scholarship and learning.
So think about magic. Think of illusions, enchantment, and deception. Think about change, shapeshifting, blurred edges. What’s just a projection of the desired self, or what you think others might desire, and what’s actually real, if anything? What is a performer beyond their gorgeous makeup, hair, and gown? What is the beautiful artifice? And what is underneath that that the audience might get the briefest glimpse of before the glamour dazzles them again?
Join us for a drag and cabaret exploration of GLAMOUR for this month’s Showstoppers Cabaret!
