Esoterotica is a revolving cast of local New Orleans writers reading their original erotic writing. Selections include poetry, spoken word, short stories, essays, humorous monologues, and even songs. However, since the first dates of the show, we have been asked most often by those whom have never been:
What does Esoterotica mean when it says Erotica?
Here is our response:
Erotica is defined in the dictionary as “literature or art designed to arouse sexual desire.” We do not think this is enough. To us, erotica explores an integral part of the human experience, the pleasures of the senses. It combines the two binders of humanity, written language and sexual experience.
Erotica has a long, varied and beautiful literary history, from Christina Rossetti to Colette, from Pablo Neruda to Charles Bukowski and even back to the Bible’s Song of Solomon. It transcends gender, status, race, language, country of origin and generations. It can be funny or heartbreaking and everything in between, because some of the best sex happens when one is comfortable enough to laugh, cry, and just be who you are.
Esoterotica is not a straight event, gay or even queer event. It is a human event, all inclusive because our life experiences, our basic desires and needs for connection cross all the self-imposed boundaries of humanity. And as such, no preconceived notions or assumptions are welcome; nor will any discrimination against anyone’s sensitivities or proclivities be tolerated. Esoterotica is a safe space to shed any shame, explore yourself with words openly and then revel in that exploration and that of others. Don’t hide your desire for pleasure away in the bedroom, tucked away in the back of a drawer or under the bed, bring it out and be proud; it’s one of the very things that makes you human.
Life’s pleasures are a sensory experience, share yours, join us.
